You’ve been dreaming about buying a full time or weekend home on Lake Lanier but just can’t seem to pull the trigger and make it happen. The 2018 average sales price on a lake front home was $605,000, so that might be the first thing holding you back (although I currently have properties available for under $400,000). Naturally, if you are considering purchasing a weekend home, you might wonder if you will use it enough to make that costly decision worthwhile. Why not pack your family up and head to the lake for a week or weekend of fun and relaxation? Like most people, you probably haven’t experienced half of the activities that are available to visitors. Who knows, this might help you in making your decision.
Lake Lanier is north of Atlanta, Georgia and has all kinds of activities that will appeal to families. The lake was created by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and is now one of the most beloved getaway destinations in Georgia. As you plan your trip, here are ten fun family activities and attractions that you’ll enjoy experiencing during your stay.
Rent a boat or jet ski from a local marina and see the lake by water. This might also help you determine which part of the lake you prefer. The south end of the lake tends to be busier with more boat traffic but is very convenient to activities by boat including Lake Lanier Islands and many dining options. It is also closer to shopping/restaurants by land than some areas further north. You may prefer a quieter area with less boat traffic. If so, you may want to consider exploring the northern end of the lake. Sunrise Sailing Club offers sailing classes if you’re interested in learning how to handle a sailboat or rents them if your family has an experienced sailor.
No trip to the lake is complete without some time spent swimming and splashing in the water. Lake Lanier features 680 miles of shoreline and 23 beaches of varying size. Pack a lunch and visit one of them or head to Lake Lanier Islands where you can play at the water park or beach. Don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!
3. ZIP LINING
Another fun adventure for the whole family can be had at Lake Lanier Islands, experience a thrilling zip line ride along the canopy. After learning how to zip line and reviewing all of the safety precautions, you and your family get your chance to soar above the trees and enjoy the amazing views.
Pack up your fishing gear or stop at Hammond’s Fishing Gear to buy everything you need or hire a professional fishing guide for the day. At Lake Lanier, you can fish from the boat, shoreline or a dock. This could be the big catch! Don’t forget to purchase a fishing license which can be purchased online or at Hammond’s.
5. SUNSET CRUISE
If you brought your own boat, take an evening to enjoy the breathtaking sunset by water. If not, find a park or view the sunset from your vacation rental or campground. There are also many options for sunset and dinner cruises where you can let someone else do the work while you sit back and enjoy.
6. LAKE LANIER STABLES
Why not saddle up for a great ride at the Stables at Lanier Islands? Gentle horses are ready to take you through a set of scenic trails along the shores of Lake Lanier. In addition to trail rides, they offer pony rides, summer and fall horse camps, riding lessons and much more in a relaxed and educational setting.
Take some time out of your water activities and practice your back swing. Lake Lanier Islands also has its own 18-hole golf course, where you and your group play while taking in amazing views of the lake in the background. If you are not a serious golfer or you have young children and want a fun filled family day, you can take the whole family for some miniature golf instead.
